Best Places to Stay in Door County, Wisconsin

There is no shortage of places to stay in Door County, Wisconsin. But you might be surprised to discover that once you make your way north of Sturgeon Bay, you won't find any accommodations owned by major chains. I think this is part of what makes this area so special. Each of the small coastal towns scattered across the peninsula has its own selection of historic inns, lodges, boutique hotels, and campgrounds — many with stunning views of Lake Michigan or Green Bay. This post will help you sift through the options and find the best places to stay in Door County for your trip, whether you're planning a romantic escape, a family vacation, or a budget-friendly weekend of hiking and lighthouse hopping.

I'm a travel advisor, and Door County is the kind of place where the options can feel overwhelming and where you stay can impact the whole trip. We stayed at Ellison Inn and explored the peninsula from there, spending time in each of the coastal towns, so I've seen how they compare. Here's how I'd match each hotel to the kind of trip you're planning.

Orienting yourself in Door County

Door County is a long, narrow peninsula with Green Bay on the west side and Lake Michigan on the east. The bay side tends to be calmer, with sunset views and a more relaxed pace. The lake side is wilder and more rugged. Because it's a peninsula, it's easy to underestimate how long it takes to get around, especially in the summer months, when peak season traffic along Highway 42 can be much slower.

Here's an overview of what to expect from each of the coastal towns on the peninsula.

Sturgeon Bay is the gateway to the peninsula and its largest city. It's the best place for national hotel brands, a wider range of price points, and easy dining. Downtown Sturgeon Bay has restaurants, shops, and the Door County Maritime Museum, and Potawatomi State Park is just outside town. The tradeoff is that Sturgeon Bay is also the farthest from the northern attractions.

Egg Harbor sits about midway up the bay side. It's a good choice for families and anyone who wants a central location, with wineries, shops, and beaches nearby. The town itself is cute, and the Harbor View Park is a great place for sunset.

Fish Creek is the home of Peninsula State Park and one of the most popular bases on the peninsula. It's walkable, lively, and right next to the park's hiking, biking, and bayside views.

Ephraim is a quiet, picturesque village on the bay with a historic feel. It's a natural fit for couples who want a slower, more romantic stay.

Sister Bay is the largest town on the northern half of the peninsula. It has plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance, making it a convenient base if you'd rather park the car for the full weekend.

Ellison Bay is peaceful and more remote. It's a great home base if you want to explore Newport State Park (a designated dark sky park), Gills Rock, and the ferry to Washington Island and Rock Island.

Baileys Harbor and Jacksonport are on the Lake Michigan side, with easy access to Cana Island Lighthouse, The Ridges Sanctuary, Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park.

Best Door County Hotels for a Couples Getaway

courtesy Hillside Waterfront Hotel

Hillside Waterfront Hotel

  • Location: Ephraim

  • 4.7/5 on Tripadvisor

Hillside is the one to book if you love historic inns. The hotel dates to the 1890s, when Ephraim was filling up with summer visitors escaping the cities to the south. Ephraim is one of the most charming villages on the peninsula, and this hotel puts you right in the middle of it: wander the waterfront at sunset, grab dinner in town, and head back without ever getting in the car.

The inn itself is small, with five upscale rooms with private baths and balconies, plus two remodeled private cottages. Some rooms have fireplaces, and the terrace and library are good spots to settle in with a book. There's no pool, but a complimentary breakfast is served daily, so you can start the morning without going anywhere.

Best Hotels for Families in Door County

courtesy Landmark Resort

The Landmark Resort, Egg Harbor

  • Location: Egg Harbor

  • 4.2/5 on Tripadvisor

  • Resort Fee: $10/night

The Landmark is the easy choice for a family trip because it gives everyone room to spread out. The resort has one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites with full kitchens and living rooms, so you can cook breakfast, store leftovers, and skip sharing a single hotel room. With over 250 accommodations, it's also one of the largest properties on the peninsula, which means there really is room for the entire family.

The Landmark sits on 40 wooded acres with resort amenities including four swimming pools (three heated outdoor pools and one indoor pool), a hot tub in each building, a fitness center, a sauna and steam room, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and a game room. In the evenings, you can gather around the fire pit or have dinner at Carrington, the resort's on-site restaurant. And when you want a change of scene, Egg Harbor's shops, wineries, and beaches are a short drive away.

Best Boutique Hotel in Door County

The DöRR Hotel

  • Location: Sister Bay

  • 4.1/5 on Tripadvisor

The DöRR puts you in the heart of Sister Bay, within walking distance of local restaurants and shops. You can walk to breakfast, browse the stores, and watch the sunset over the bay without moving the car. If you like the idea of a design-forward stay without giving up location, this is the one.

The hotel opened in 2021 and was the first newly built hotel on the peninsula in almost 20 years. The style is Nordic-inspired, built around the Danish idea of hygge, so it feels cozy rather than flashy. Inside, the two-story lobby has cedar beams, a fireplace, and a lobby bar, and outside there's a courtyard with a fire pit and lawn games. The hotel has 47 rooms, including nine fireplace suites, most with a balcony overlooking Sister Bay, and a complimentary grab-and-go breakfast is available each morning.

Best Budget-Friendly Hotels in Door County

Ellison Inn

  • Location: Ellison Bay

  • 4.9/5 on Tripadvisor

  • Resort Fee: No

We stayed here for three nights in a bay view double room, and it was a wonderful stay. It's a classic roadside motel that has been updated with modern touches like keyless entry and flatscreen frame TVs, but it holds on to its mid-century modern charm. Each room is individually appointed, with decor chosen to match the original 1960s tile in the bathroom.

The location is what makes it a great budget pick. The inn sits across the street from Ellison Bay Beach, Linden Gallery is a short walk away, and Ellison Bluff State Natural Area is a few minutes by car. We also loved the short drive to Newport State Park, which made an early-morning start for dark sky viewing a little less daunting.

You won't find a pool, but it is a comfortable stay, and the basics are covered: air conditioning and free Wi-Fi in every room, free parking, and a picnic area on the grounds. The inn also has an on-site restaurant, the White Pine Supper Club, so you can have dinner without leaving the property.

Fresh Coast Motel

  • Location: Fish Creek

  • 4.3/5 on Tripadvisor

  • Resort Fee: No

Fresh Coast was at the top of our list when we were deciding where to stay on our trip to Door County. The only reason we didn't book it is that it didn't have availability for our dates! We weren't the only ones with our eye on it, either: it placed in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards in both 2025 and 2026.

The location is the big draw. The motel is in downtown Fish Creek, across the street from the public beach and 0.4 miles from Peninsula State Park, so you can spend your days hiking, biking, and exploring the shoreline. It has been around since the 1940s and was renovated from the former By-the-Bay Motel. Today, it has 15 rooms with contactless check-in, so you can skip the front desk. Rooms have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a microwave, and a refrigerator. Parking is free, and there's a fire pit and outdoor seating for evenings. It's also pet-friendly (fees apply), so the whole family can join in.

Map of where to stay in Door County

Best Hotels in Door County FAQs

What part of Door County should I stay in?

It depends on the kind of trip you want. For first-timers, Fish Creek or Sister Bay are the easiest bases, since both are walkable and close to a lot of attractions. Ephraim is great for a quiet, romantic stay. Egg Harbor works well for families and anyone who wants to be central. If your priority is dark skies and quiet, Ellison Bay is a good pick. Baileys Harbor and Jacksonport are best if you plan to spend your time on the lake side, near Whitefish Dunes State Park. Sturgeon Bay is the best option if you want a chain hotel or the widest range of prices, but you'll have a longer drive to the northern towns.

Are there pet-friendly hotels in Door County?

Yes, but the options are more limited than you'd expect, especially among the most popular hotels. Of the hotels in this guide, only Fresh Coast Motel in Fish Creek welcomes pets, with a limit of one, and approval is required.

When is the best time to visit Door County?

My top pick is late fall. You still have amazing weather to enjoy outdoor activities, but without the crowds of peak season. Check out my guide to the best time to visit Door County for a season-by-season breakdown to help you pick the best timing for your own trip.

Do I need a car in Door County?

Yes, for the peninsula as a whole. The attractions are spread out along a long, narrow stretch of land, and you'll want a car to reach the state parks, lighthouses, and wineries. The scenic drives across the peninsula are part of the appeal, too. The Door County Coastal Byway, which connects three state parks and ten county parks, placed in the 2026 USA TODAY 10Best road trip awards.

But you don't necessarily need a car every day. If you stay somewhere walkable, you can park the car and head out on foot for dinner and the evening. The DöRR is within walking distance of 14 bars and restaurants in Sister Bay. Fresh Coast Motel is directly across from the public beach in downtown Fish Creek, and Hillside sits in the center of Ephraim.

Where should I stay near Peninsula State Park?

Fish Creek is the closest base. Fresh Coast Motel is 0.4 miles from Peninsula State Park, so you can easily get there for a morning hike or bike ride. Ephraim is just up the road. The Landmark in Egg Harbor is about an 11-minute drive away.

Are there waterfront or beachfront hotels in Door County?

Yes, especially on the Green Bay side. The DöRR has Sister Bay Beach just across the street. Fresh Coast is across from Fish Creek's public beach. Ellison Inn is directly across from Ellison Bay Beach. Hillside sits on the water in Ephraim.

The bay side tends to be calmer and is the place for sunsets. The Lake Michigan side is wilder and faces sunrise. If you want a lake-side stay, look at Baileys Harbor or Jacksonport.

Are Door County hotels open year-round?

Many are, but not all. The DöRR even offers snowshoe rentals, which gives you an idea of how the peninsula changes in winter. Rates are generally lower off-season, but some restaurants and shops cut back their hours, so check before you go if you have your heart set on a specific dining experience.

Which Door County hotels have a pool?

If a pool is a priority, book the Landmark in Egg Harbor. It has three heated outdoor pools, an indoor pool, and hot tubs, so it works in any weather. Just north of Sturgeon Bay, Westwood Shores also has indoor and outdoor pools.

Is it better to stay in Sturgeon Bay or farther north?

Sturgeon Bay is the gateway to the peninsula and has the widest range of options, including chain hotels. Once you head north, you'll find mostly independent inns and boutique hotels, and the towns get smaller and quieter. The tradeoff is driving time. Staying in Sturgeon Bay can add a lot of miles each way if you want to explore Ephraim, Sister Bay, or Ellison Bay. My advice is to stay in Sturgeon Bay if budget or chains matter most, and head north if you want the small-town charm.

Final Thoughts on the Best Places to Stay in Door County

If you're still deciding, here's how I'd narrow it down. Book Hillside for a quiet, romantic stay in Ephraim, the Landmark if you're traveling with kids or a bigger group, and the DöRR if you want to walk to dinner in Sister Bay. On a budget, Ellison Inn is a great home base for dark sky nights and park days, while Fresh Coast puts you in Fish Creek right near Peninsula State Park. And if you'd like help matching a hotel to your dates, I'm happy to look at it with you.
