Quick Tips for Door County Coffee Shops

  • Check seasonal hours. Many Door County coffee shops close or cut back their hours in the off-season. I visited in late September, and one cottage cafe had already closed for the year. Always check before you go.

  • Plan around the geography. Door County is a long, narrow peninsula. Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor are at the southern end, and Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay and Baileys Harbor sit farther north. Give yourself drive time between stops.

Best Coffee Shops in Sister Bay, WI

Sister Bay is the heart of northern Door County, so it's a convenient place to start your morning.

Happy Coffee: Year-Round Coffee Shop in Sister Bay

Happy Coffee is a family-owned coffee shop that describes itself as Sister Bay’s only year-round coffee shop. The house blend is roasted in small batches in collaboration with Kick Ash in Ellison Bay, which you'll find later in this guide. The menu includes house-made syrups, fresh-baked pastries and made-to-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches. I ordered the seasonal Brown Sugar + Sage Latte and my friend tried the Poached Apple Latte. Both are made with house-made syrups, and the brown sugar and sage played off each other nicely. If you're looking for something to nibble on, they also offer bagel sandwiches, grab-n-go yogurt parfaits, fruit cups and fresh bakery items like muffins, scones and danishes.

Good to know: They offer online ordering if you want to skip the line. When we went on a weekday, there was no wait, but when we drove past on the weekend, the line was out the door.

June's Farmhouse: Coffee in Sister Bay

June's Farmhouse serves Colectivo Coffee, a specialty roaster based in Milwaukee. They have classic flavored syrups that are always available (caramel, maple, mocha, vanilla, and honey) along with a seasonal selection. I went with a maple latte here. They also offer items like galettes, cakes and cookies, but we didn't eat.

Good to know: We went on a Monday morning in late September and basically had the place to ourselves, but this adorable spot is sure to be busy during peak season and weekends.

Best Coffee Shop in Ellison Bay, WI

Ellison Bay is a quieter corner of northern Door County, which makes it a good place to slow down with a second cup.

Kick Ash: Roastery, Bakery and Gift Shop in Ellison Bay

Kick Ash is more than a coffee shop. It's a roastery, a gluten-free bakery and a gift shop all in one. Housed in a stunning old church, Kick Ash has cozy spots throughout, so it’s easy to settle in and enjoy your drink for a slow start to your morning. I ordered the yogurt granola parfait, which is made with the shop's house-made granola, and a seasonal maple latte that hit the spot on a crisp fall morning. We enjoyed our coffees in the shop and browsed the gift selection before heading out for an afternoon of exploring.

Good to know: A top pick for gluten-free options, since the granola and bakery items are all gluten-free, which makes it an easy stop if you have dietary restrictions.

Best Coffee Shops in Sturgeon Bay, WI

Sturgeon Bay is the gateway to Door County and the first big town you'll reach when you cross onto the peninsula, which makes it a natural place to grab your first cup of the trip. If you’re there on a Saturday morning, take your coffee to go and head to 3rd Avenue for the Sturgeon Bay Farmers Market.

5th and Jefferson Coffee House: Downtown Sturgeon Bay

5th and Jefferson is a quirky coffee shop in the heart of Sturgeon Bay that serves coffee, tea, fresh fruit smoothies and a full breakfast menu. I went with a honey lavender London fog paired with the grilled egg slidies. Everything is made fresh to order, so if you're in a hurry, this might not be the best choice. One thing I loved: drinks came in to-go cups, while food was served for dining in. Choose from indoor dining or seating in their lovely outdoor garden (which also has a walk-up ordering window).

Good to know: We arrived shortly after 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning in late September and were greeted with a very short line. By the time we left, the line was out the door.

Door County Coffee & Tea Company: Year-Round Coffee Shop

If you're looking for a large selection of coffee that you can take home with you, head to Door County Coffee & Tea Company. This family-owned roastery has been roasting arabica coffee beans in Door County for more than 30 years and now offers more than 100 varieties. Their location just north of Sturgeon Bay is home to a coffee bar, a cafe with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, and a gift shop filled with Harney & Sons Tea, gourmet foods, Door County souvenirs and, of course, coffee. We didn't eat, but I did have a cherry almond latte and went home with a couple full-pot sachets of their specialty coffee.

Good to know: A window in the gift shop lets you see into the roasting facility for a behind-the-scenes look at the roasting process.

Best Coffee Shop on Washington Island, WI

If you have time to take the ferry from Northport, Washington Island is a fun addition to your trip. Who doesn't love a ferry ride?

Red Cup Coffee House: Coffee on Washington Island

If you didn't grab coffee on the mainland before heading to Washington Island, Red Cup Coffee House is the spot to go. We headed straight there after getting off the ferry, along with many, many of the other passengers. I went with a London Fog tea latte here. They also offer breakfast sandwiches if you want something a little more substantial.

Good to know: Expect a rush right after each ferry arrives from the mainland.

More Door County Coffee Shops to Try

We couldn't fit everything into one trip, so here's the shortlist of Door County coffee shops that are already on the list for next time:

  • Bayside Coffee (Fish Creek): A coffee shop in a historic cottage, located in the Bayside Cottage Shops. It had already closed for the season when we visited in late September, so check seasonal dates before planning your trip around this coffee shop.

  • Blue Horse Beach Cafe (Fish Creek): An espresso bar and bakery with views of Green Bay. Their cinnamon rolls are on my list for my next visit to Door County.

  • Ephraim Coffee Lab (Ephraim): Home to Isely Coffee Roasters with a coffee bar featuring espresso drinks pulled from a traditional, handcrafted, manual lever espresso machine which sounds incredibly cool.

  • Cupola Cafe (Egg Harbor): Set in a historic building, and shares its space with an art gallery and specialty wine shop, which makes it one of the more charming stops on this list. We stopped in late in the afternoon, so we didn't grab a coffee, but the local art still made it worth the visit.

Door County Coffee Shops FAQ

What is the best coffee shop in Door County?

The best coffee shop depends on what you're looking for. For a roastery with a bakery and gift shop, I loved Kick Ash in Ellison Bay. For a cafe with a quirky vibe and full breakfast, try 5th and Jefferson in Sturgeon Bay. For an open year-round pick in Sister Bay, Happy Coffee is a solid choice.

Which Door County coffee shops are open year-round?

Several shops stay open through the winter, including Happy Coffee in Sister Bay and Kick Ash in Ellison Bay, though hours may be shorter. Always check before you go.

Are there gluten-free coffee shop options in Door County?

Yes. Kick Ash in Ellison Bay makes its in-house baked goods and granola gluten-free. I had the granola as part of my yogurt parfait and thought it was lovely (even as someone who makes their own granola at home).

Can I buy Door County coffee beans to take home?

Yes. Door County Coffee & Tea Company and Kick Ash both sell their locally roasted beans. You can find them in each of their coffee shops as well as at other retail outlets across the peninsula.

Final Thoughts on Where to Get a Cup of Coffee in Door County

Every Door County vacation needs a hot cup of coffee, and with so many coffee shops in the harbor towns, you’ll never have to drive far to find a good one. It sounds like a cop-out, but we genuinely enjoyed every cup we had during our week-long trip. If I were already in Door County trying to decide on a spot to stop, I'd start with the option on this list closest to where you are and go from there.
