Guide to The Best Time To Visit Sedona, Arizona

One of my favorite places to visit — and to help clients plan trips to — is the Southwest. Sedona is consistently at the top of that list for its stunning landscapes and wellness vibes. As a travel advisor, one of the questions I get most from people dreaming of a desert escape is some version of: when is the best time to visit?

Sedona doesn't necessarily have a "best time of the year" to visit, as it truly is a year-round destination. Its location in northern Arizona, at a higher elevation than most of the desert Southwest, spares it from the harshest heat. That's part of why Sedona has four distinct seasons — something that often surprises visitors.

Your best time to visit will vary depending on what you enjoy and what you're hoping to see. Wildflowers blooming in vibrant reds, yellows and oranges against the red rocks? Spring. Fall foliage and mild weather? Fall. Fewer crowds and quiet, peaceful days perfect for cuddling by a fire between hikes? Winter. The timing of your trip will impact the type of vacation you have but I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way (unless you literally begin to melt at 90 degrees).

This guide breaks down what to expect in Sedona season by season, so you can find the best time of year for your travel style.

When is the Best Time to Visit Sedona? My Quick Answer

Sedona's red rock country welcomes visitors in every season. The best time to visit depends a bit on the type of trip you prefer (and your heat tolerance). Each of Sedona's four seasons has its own personality — and its own perks and drawbacks. If you're looking for the best time to travel for the most affordable rates, January to mid-February will be your best bet according to Sedona's visitors bureau. For the fewest crowds, look at July and August which tend to see fewer visitors due to the summer heat. For mild temperatures perfect for outdoor activities, spring or fall are a great option but can also mean crowded trails.

I'm breaking it down by season below so you can get a feel for each to determine which might be best for you!

Sedona by Season

Spring in Sedona

Spring season in Sedona is one of the most popular times to visit. Visitors enjoy comfortable temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 80s. The desert landscape comes to life with blooming wildflowers and greenery making spring an ideal time for hiking, photography and taking in the red rock vistas. The trade off is that visiting during this time means larger crowds and higher lodging rates. Hotels fill up quick, especially during spring break in late March and April so be sure to plan well in advance if you're considering visiting this time of year.

Spring might be for you if:

  • you want to see wildflowers in bloom

  • don't mind trading crowds for mild weather

Notable Spring Happenings:

Summer in Sedona

Summer months in Sedona are known for their mid-day heat with temperatures often climbing into the 90s. However, temperatures can still be pleasant in the early morning. Summer in Sedona is also monsoon season, bringing occasional late afternoon rainstorms that leave behind dramatic skies and the potential for cool evenings. Because of the less than ideal weather, summer tends to be a less crowded time to visit and that can also mean lower lodging prices than you'll find in peak seasons.

Sedona has a few options for cooling off in the summer heat, be sure to pack a swimsuit and include a day in your itinerary to wade along Oak Creek and take a dip at Slide Rock State Park. Trade hikes for scenic drives or a ride along the Verde Canyon Railroad. Check out my guide to things to do in Sedona besides hiking for more ideas.

Summer might be for you if:

  • you don't mind the heat of summer

  • you prefer smaller crowds

Notable Summer Happenings:

Fall in Sedona

The fall season in Sedona is the second high season and for good reason. It's the perfect time for outdoor adventures with daytime temperatures in the 50s to 70s depending on the month. Fall foliage adds bursts of color against the red rock landscape and the cooler air and autumn light enhance their beauty. Like other Sedona seasons, fall is a great time for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and other outdoor adventures.

Fall might be for you if:

  • you want to see fall foliage set against the red rocks

  • you're hoping for ideal conditions for hiking, biking or climbing

Notable Fall Happenings:

Winter in Sedona

Winter in Sedona is the quietest time of year for the popular tourist destinations. The winter months are characterized by average daytime temperatures in the 50s and chilly nights made for a good meal and an early night in. Snow in Sedona is not common, but if you're lucky enough to experience "Snowdona" it's a stunning sight to see the white snow dusting the red rock formations. Winter hiking is excellent and visitors will appreciate the serene trails and shorter lines for iconic photos at popular attractions.

My husband and I spent several days here over the Christmas holidays and it still stands as one of our favorite vacations. We spent all day hiking under clear blue skies during the day, paired with amazing meals and warm fireside hangs in the evenings. My guide to visiting Sedona in winter covers everything you need to know.

Pro tip: If you plan to hike in winter, don't let the cooler temps fool you! The dry air will have you thirstier than you might expect, so you'll still want to pack plenty of water for any outdoor adventures.

Winter might be for you if:

  •  you are looking for the best deals on accommodations

  • don't mind cooler temperatures

FAQs About When to Visit Sedona

When is the best time to visit Sedona?

In my opinion, any time but summer! But, full disclosure, I'm a total wimp when it comes to high heat and thrive in temps between 50-80 with no humidity. I'd rather be on a trail when it's cold out, even with light snow on the ground, than when it's 90 degrees.

Is Sedona, AZ worth visiting?

Yes! I was fully enamored with the red rock landscape and I think you will be too. Sedona's cool, casual southwest vibe has a relaxing aura to it even if you aren't partaking in the energy healing and spa retreats this destination is well known for. For hikers and mountain bikers, this area is absolute paradise with endless trails at your fingertips.

How many days should I spend in Sedona?

I would recommend at least 2 full days at a minimum, if you don't want to feel rushed, make it 3. We spent 3 days here on our first trip and it felt like the perfect introduction. We got in some iconic hikes and delicious meals but were left with a to-do list for next time.

What is there to do in Sedona besides hiking?

Sedona has a ton to offer beyond the trails. Some options include art galleries, jeep tours or even a hot air balloon ride. More ideas are included in my guide to the top activities in Sedona besides hiking.

How far is Sedona from the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is just over 2 hours from Sedona, making it a perfect day trip or to incorporate in a broader Arizona road trip.

Is Sedona expensive to visit?

It can be, but it doesn't have to be. Sedona offers visitors everything from luxury wellness retreats to budget-friendly hotels and even camping. Food and beverage prices are on par with other popular tourist destinations, expect meals to be $15/per person and up for casual dining.

Do I need a car in Sedona?

Yes, a rental car is a necessity in Sedona, especially if you plan on hiking.  While there are complimentary shuttles available in town, they focus on top visited attractions and may not get you to every destination you hope to visit. Additionally, Sedona is 45 minutes (Flagstaff) to two hours (PHX) from the nearest commercial airports. Keep this in mind as you think about getting to Sedona from your home base.

Final Thoughts on the Best Time to Visit Sedona

Sedona really doesn't have a bad time to visit, but choosing a season to match your goals is important. If you are price-conscious above all else, January and February are tough to beat. Don't mind the summer heat, especially if that means fewer crowds and days spent in the creek? July and August are for you. Plan for spring or fall if you want idyllic weather and don't mind trading bluebird days for more crowds.

No matter which of Sedona's seasons you choose, the red rock landscape will be there to deliver dramatic views.
