Orienting yourself in Greenville, South Carolina

Downtown Greenville is compact and walkable, centered around Main Street and Falls Park on the Reedy — most first-time visitors will want to be within walking distance of this stretch. Just north of downtown, Travelers Rest offers a quieter, mountain-adjacent base with easy access to the Blue Ridge foothills and Swamp Rabbit Trail, while the east side of Greenville (toward Woodruff Road and Verdae) is more suburban, with larger properties, easier parking, and better value — a good fit for families or longer stays. For most visitors, staying downtown means you can skip the car entirely for dining and entertainment, including shows at the Peace Center or Bon Secours Wellness Arena; staying east or north means a short drive in, but often more space and a lower price tag.

Best Greenville Hotels for A Couples Getaway

These are the standout properties for a romantic Greenville getaway — each offering a combination of stunning settings, elevated service, and the kind of details that make a weekend away feel special.

Hotel Domestique

  • Location: Travelers Rest

  • 4/5 on Tripadvisor

  • Accolades: Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Award

  • Resort Fee: No

Tucked into the Blue Ridge foothills just north of Greenville in Travelers Rest, Hotel Domestique is an intimate 13-room boutique hotel co-owned by former pro cyclist George Hincapie. The property blends Old World European design with a serene, hilltop setting surrounded by vineyards and mountain views — a favorite for both weddings and quiet romantic getaways. I'm not exaggerating when I say it feels like you've been transported to a Tuscan vineyard on this property.

Rooms are individually appointed with nightly turndown service. The on-site Restaurant 17 is a destination in its own right, serving seasonal Southern-European fare with sweeping mountain views from the patio. Even if you aren't staying at Hotel Domestique, Restaurant 17 is worthy of a dinner reservation and perfect for celebrating an anniversary or birthday.

The property leans into an active, outdoorsy identity, with direct access to some of the best road cycling routes in the Upstate, plus hiking and golf nearby. Note that it's located in a remote, countryside setting — you'll want a car, and it's about a 20-minute drive from downtown Greenville — but that seclusion is exactly what makes it feel like such a romantic getaway.

Hotel Hartness

  • Location: East Greenville (12 miles from Downtown)

  • 4/5 Tripadvisor

  • Accolades: Michelin Guide Recommended, Condé Nast Traveler Top 25 Hotels in the South

  • Resort Fee: Yes

Built on the historic 180-acre Hartness family estate, this boutique resort feels secluded despite sitting minutes from downtown Greenville. The grounds include a small lake, 15 miles of walking trails, and a large seasonal outdoor pool, and the interior is filled with curated artwork and contemporary Southern design. Guests and my clients consistently highlight the peaceful setting, spacious rooms, and dining at Patterson Restaurant and The Captain bar as highlights.

It's a versatile pick — reviewers note it works equally well for a romantic weekend, a family stay, or a girls' trip, thanks to the resort-style pool, grounds and spa. Just budget for the resort fee, which some guests have found catches them off guard if they aren't expecting it.

Wondering where to stay in Greenville with family?

Courtesy of Embassy Suites

Embassy Suites Greenville Downtown Riverlace

  • Location: Downtown Greenville

  • 4/5 on Tripadvisor

  • Kids Club: No

  • Resort Fee: No

This all-suite property is a go-to for families, thanks to an indoor pool, its convenient location, and suites with a separate living area and sofa bed — helpful for spreading out with kids. It sits on the banks of the Reedy River just steps from Falls Park and includes complimentary made-to-order breakfast each morning plus an evening manager's reception with free drinks and appetizers.

The Embassy Suites pet policy allows up to two dogs or cats, which means your furry friends can come too.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Greenville Downtown

  • Location: Downtown Greenville

  • 4/5 on Tripadvisor

  • Kids Club: No

  • Resort Fee: Yes

Homewood Suites Downtown is a strong all-suite option for families. It is located right next to Fluor Field, with studio and one-bedroom suites that include a full kitchen — fridge, stove, microwave, and dishwasher — a real advantage for longer stays or picky eaters. It's an easy walk to Falls Park on the Reedy, the Peace Center, and Main Street dining, and the Greenville Zoo is just two miles away.

The complimentary breakfast buffet and outdoor pool round out the family-friendly basics. What sets it apart is pure walkability — you can genuinely explore downtown Greenville on foot from here.

Best Boutique Hotel in Greenville, SC

Courtesy of Grand Bohemian Lodge

Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville

  • Location: Downtown Greenville

  • Accolades: Michelin Guide Recommended

  • Resort Fee: Yes

Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, the Grand Bohemian Lodge brings the brand's signature art-forward, eclectic design to downtown Greenville, with an on-site gallery, and interiors that feel more like a boutique art hotel than a standard downtown stay. It's positioned right in the heart of Falls Park, putting dining, shopping, and the Swamp Rabbit Trail within easy walking distance.

It's a great pick for travelers who want a downtown, walkable base but don't want a generic big-brand feel — the design and art collection give it a distinct personality that's hard to find elsewhere in Greenville.

Best Budget Friendly Hotels in Greenville, SC

Courtesy of Hampton Inn

Hampton Inn Downtown Riverplace

  • Location: Downtown Greenville

  • Resort Fee: No

For travelers who want a reliable, no-frills downtown base without paying downtown-boutique prices, the Hampton Inn Downtown delivers solid value in a prime location near Main Street. Free hot breakfast and no resort fee help keep the total cost down.

It won't have the design flourishes of the Grand Bohemian or the grounds of Hotel Hartness, but for a comfortable, well-located place to sleep between days of exploring downtown, it's hard to beat on price.
