Girls Guide to College Football Travel: Planning Tips and Packing List
Sporting events aren’t just for the boys. There is just something about a college football game on a crisp fall day that cannot be beat.
While traveling for a football game might seem like a hassle, the right planning and prep can make it easy. With these tips, you’ll have everything you need to tackle sports travel like a pro and enjoy every moment of cheering on your favorite team.
Game Day Planning & Prep
Book Lodging as Early as Possible
A lot of college campuses are located in smaller towns with fewer hotels close to campus. The earlier you book, the better your chances of snagging preferred hotels and houses close campus. If you have a larger group, consider looking for area rental houses on VRBO.
Newer hotel groups like Graduate Hotels have recognized the need for quality lodging in college towns like Knoxville, TN; State College, PA; and Auburn, AL to name a few. Each Graduate Hotel embraces the spirit and uniqueness of the university and town in which they are located.
Transportation
Rent a Car
If you’re flying to your destination, consider renting a car to keep transportation in your own hands. Smaller towns = fewer Ubers and higher demand on game day weekends. This will also come in handy if you plan on tailgating.
Public Transportation & Shuttles
If you prefer not to drive, check to see if your hotel offers shuttles to and from the airport and/or campus. Or, check out the city’s public transportation system to see if it can get you everywhere you need to go.
Pregaming and Tailgating
Tailgates
If you want to take in the local tailgate culture, you’ll need to do some research ahead of time. Check university or team websites for information on game day parking (ie. do you need to purchase a parking pass, where are parking lots located and what time doe they open?). If you would prefer to join an existing tailgate over hosting your own, check out Facebook fan groups or use apps like Tailgate Guys to find tailgates going on in the area.
Sports Bars & Restaurants
Every college town has its teams best pregame spots - do some research before your trip to find popular sports bars to hit before and after the game.
When To Go
This will totally depend on where the schools is located and what type of experience you’re looking for. Want an iconic ‘snow game’ - head to schools in the Northeast and Midwest in November for you best chance at this. Looking for something a little more mild? Head to an SEC game in late October to avoid the heat.
Plan a longer weekend and arrive on Thursday for more time explore campus, town and the surrounding areas.
Packing Essentials
Luggage
Whether you starting packing a week in advance or prefer the spontaneous nigh-before approach, packing for a football game is easy. Pack light and leave it to the just the essentials.
Weekender Tote / Bag - My favorite is the Beis Mini Weekender because of it’s organization pockets and separate shoe compartment.
Packing Cubes
Toiletry Bag - I love this hanging toiletry from Calpak - it fits all of my basics for a long weekend and I love that I can hang it to keep the hotel sink clutter free.

Clothes
Before packing, check the weather forecast for where you’re headed - September football games in SEC Country vs. a November game in Nebraska are a world apart weather-wise. My top priority when it comes to a game day look are: comfort & colors. For warmer days, a skort, sneakers and a college tee are my go-to. In the cooler months, I opt for a pair of jeans and a crew neck team sweatshirt.
Travel Outfit - I love a pair of leggings, shacket and white sneakers
Game Day Outfit
PJs
Undies
Purse
Before you head out for the weekend, be sure to check the stadium bag policy for the school that is hosting! Make sure your bag meets those requirements whether it is a small single-pocket or clear bag (this clear bag is my favorite). Be sure to only bring the necessities so you don’t feel like a pack-mule hauling around a piece of luggage all day. Here’s what you’ll find in my bag
Wallet
Phone
Lip Gloss with SPF
Travel size sunscreen
Hand sanitizer
Portable fan for hot days
Hand warmers for cold days
Portable charger
Sunglasses
Pocket Poncho if there’s a chance of rain
