Where to Stay in San José del Cabo: My Experience

I first visited San José del Cabo in 2018 - on that trip we were staying smack dab in the middle of the tourist corridor about a 30 minute drive from the historic city center. Since then, I’ve returned five times, each trip deepening my love for this little town. There’s a vibrancy here that feels authentically Mexican—from street food stalls like Doña Nina to the weekly art walk that turns the streets into a living gallery. Over the years, I’ve made friends, shared meals, and settled into the slower rhythm that matches my pace these days.

I haven't personally stayed at every property on this list. The hotels below are a mix of places I've experienced directly and properties I'd recommend to clients based on their reputation, awards, and consistent traveler feedback.

I’ve included direct booking links here for your convenience BUT, many of these properties offer perks exclusively to bookings made on your behalf by a travel advisor - think complimentary room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, resort credits, early check-in/late check-out.

Understanding Los Cabos

Before we dig in, I think it’s helpful to have a better understanding of the different areas of Los Cabos. The naming conventions for all of the destinations in Baja California are confusing enough to make your head spin. Here’s a breakdown to help you get your bearings:

  • Los Cabos: This refers to the overarching region.

  • Cabo San Lucas: Also known as just “Cabo,” the more popular tourist destination known for the ‘El Arco’ arch, bars, clubs and restaurants lining a picturesque marina.

  • San José del Cabo: Also referred to as “San José,” the historic, artsy town.

  • Tourist Corridor: The stretch along the coast and Hwy 1 between Cabo San Lucas and San José. This area is lined with resorts and golf courses.

If you're still deciding whether the San Jose del Cabo is right for you versus Cabo San Lucas or the Tourist Corridor, check out my full comparison guide first. If you've already landed here — let's get into it.

Now that you have your bearings… we’re focus in on San José. Within that, I’ve broken out my top hotels and resorts into smaller neighborhoods/areas to help you pick the best area for you.

El Centro

Hotels located in downtown San José del Cabo won’t have beach front views, but offer impeccable access to dining, art and shopping. If you’re are looking to be immersed in Mexican culture, staying in the heart of San José del Cabo’s historic El Centro is a great option.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Drift

Set down a cobblestone path in San José’s trendy Art District, Drift is one of San José del Cabo’s best kept secrets. Everything about this boutique hotel (a member of Design Hotels) is a total vibe - really giving that Baja, boho feel.

The rooms at Drift are inspired by the textures and minimalism of the Baja desert - combining natural materials with thoughtfully curated details. Amenities embrace the Baja vibe and include complimentary surf and yoga packages as well as spa treatments at Gypsy Soul House.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tropicana Los Cabos

Located in the in the heart of San José del Cabo, Tropicana is the perfect base for those looking to immerse themselves in the amazing art, food and atmosphere.

The rooms have recently been restored and remodeled. The furnishings embrace traditional Mexican style (think terracotta tile floors, paired with rich hand painted blue accents) with modern touches. Free private parking is also available.

Zona Hotelera

The Zona Hotelera follows the coastline of the Sea of Cortez and is the closest beachfront area to El Centro. For those that want easy, quick access to city amenities without sacrificing ocean views, this is the perfect place to stay. Generally, the beaches in this area are not considered swimmable due to the strong currents.

This 186-room beachfront property faces the Sea of Cortes and features architecturally stunning design with luxurious facilities. Offering guest rooms, suites, casitas and villas, the Viceroy Los Cabos can accommodate travelers and groups of all shapes and sizes. La Playa

Located southeast of San José del Cabo’s El Centro, on the other side of the San Jose Estuary, La Playa is a small scenic beach located near San José del Cabo’s Puerto Los Cabos marina. This area is known for its, quiet, less-commercialized atmosphere making it a peaceful alternative to busier Cabo spots. While there is a small swimmable beach in this area, resort beaches are generally not considered swimmable in La Playa.

The JW Marriott Los Cabos, a Marriott Bonvoy hotel considers itself to be ‘tropical luxury.’ This is a great option for golf lovers with easy access to an impressive 27-hold course.  Additionally, the resort features 6 restaurants, kids club, 3 pools and a luxurious on-site spa.

All of the rooms at JW Marriott feature an ocean view paired with rich, modern decor.

I personally think the spa is a stand out here featuring a modern version of the traditional temazcal, a Mexican sweat lodge used by ancient Aztecs as a therapeutic instrument to promote healing, health and well-being.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Zadun Los Cabos, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve

The Zadun Los Cabos melds traditional Mexican heritage with luxury amenities. Each of the 113 guest rooms, suites, and villas feature views of the sea paired with modern amenities, art, textiles, and finishes crafted by Mexican artisans - blurring the lines between indoors and out. Their guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows - some of the largest I’ve ever seen at a hotel.

This resort lives up to the Ritz Carlton reputation having received 2 Michelin Keys & 5 Stars by Forbes Travel Guide.

FAQs About the Best Hotels in San José del Cabo, Mexico

What is the best luxury hotel in San José del Cabo, Mexico?

One&Only Palmilla gets my vote for most luxurious hotel in San José del Cabo. Dont’ just take my word for it, One&Only has received 2 Michelin Keys as well as been awarded 5 Stars by the Forbes Travel guide.

What should I consider when choosing a luxury hotel in San José del Cabo?

It really depends on what kind of trip you're after. San José naturally attracts travelers who want a more relaxed, culturally rich experience — so boutique properties near the Art District tend to appeal to couples and solo travelers, while larger resort-style hotels in the Zona Hotelera are better suited for families who want beach access and activities on-site. Since San José has some of the best farm-to-table dining in all of Los Cabos — Flora Farms, Acre, Los Tamarindos — I'd also think carefully about whether an all-inclusive makes sense here, or whether room-only gives you the freedom to actually experience the food scene.

What is there to do in San José del Cabo, Mexico?

San José del Cabo offers a variety of activities for all types of travelers - swimmable beaches, surfing, art galleries, incredible dining experiences and so much more. Click below for a more in depth look at the top activities in San José del Cabo.

Is San José del Cabo worth visiting?

Without a doubt, San José del Cabo is worth a visit. In my opinion, if you visit Cabo without at least spending an afternoon or evening here, you have totally missed out. For those looking for a Mexico vacation that doesn’t revolve around a constant party, San José is the perfect alternative to the rowdier Cabo San Lucas. If you love great food, art and history - you will love San José del Cabo.

Flying to San José del Cabo

The nearest airport to San José del Cabo is Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). There are many direct flights from cities throughout the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Upon arrival, after you have cleared customs, proceed directly outside to meet your transportation providor and do not speak to any of the salesmen inside the airport.

Airport Transfers

🚐 Shuttle: If you do not plan to rent a car, a shuttle is the most affordable and efficient option for airport transfers. We always utilize Cabo Airport Shuttle for our transfers to and from SJD. They offer private or shared shuttle service. For private shuttles, there is also an option to add a 30 minute grocery store stop on the way. Book this ins advance!

🚕 Uber / Taxi: Uber is frankly a bit convoluted at the SJD airport as they are not permitted to pick up riders from the arrivals area. While technically an option, you will have to while a while out of the terminal to meet your driver. In this case, a taxi is the better option. It will be more expensive than a shuttle. If you do opt to utilize a taxi, coordinate and agree to a price for your trip at an official desk before departing.

🚗 Rental Car: If you are renting a car, your rental agency will pick you up via a shuttle service to take you to their off-site lot. From there you can drive yourself to San José del Cabo.

Getting Around San José del Cabo

Whether or not you need a rental car in San José del Cabo really just depends on the type of vacation you plan to have.

If you are more of a flop-and-drop traveler who only plans to leave the resort for a few meals and maybe a day of shopping, you can definitely get by without one. In this case, Uber is the best way to get to & from your resort.

Keep in mind that rush hour traffic is a thing in Mexico too and plan accordingly and plan ahead for traffic so you don’t miss any reservations!

If you plan to do a broader Baja road trip or some day trips to places like Todos Santos or Cabo Pulmo, I would highly recommend renting a car.

What’s the weather like in San Jose del Cabo?

The weather in San José del Cabo is characterized by it’s tropical desert climate featuring a “hot” and a “cool” season.
