The Best Day Trips from Cabo San Lucas (2026)
Cabo San Lucas has no shortage of things to keep you busy — the marina, El Arco, world-class deep sea fishing, incredible dining. But as a travel advisor who has been to Los Cabos more times than I can count, I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't tell you: some of the best experiences in Baja California happen when you venture beyond Cabo for the day.
The good news is that Baja California Sur is a surprisingly easy to navigate. Most of the best day trips from Cabo San Lucas are reachable in two hours or less — which means you can have a full adventure and still make it back to the marina for sunset.

Day Trips from Cabo San Lucas
I'll be honest: after a day or two of pool time, I get restless. And Cabo is in an ideal position as a home base for day trips. Many of the beaches in and around Cabo San Lucas are not swimmable due to strong waves and rip currents — so if a calm beach day is on your list, you'll want to venture out anyway. Beyond beaches, you've got charming art towns, UNESCO biosphere reserves, bucket list wildlife encounters, and mountain waterfalls — all within striking distance.
Here's where I'd point you, based on my own trips and what I recommend to clients:
San José del Cabo
Don't let the short drive fool you — San José del Cabo feels worlds away from Cabo San Lucas. Where Cabo leans loud and lively, San José is sophisticated and soulful. Think cobblestone streets draped in papel picado flags, colonial architecture splashed with street art, and one of the best gallery districts in all of Mexico.
I've been visiting San José since 2018 and it's honestly what keeps me coming back to Los Cabos. A few highlights you absolutely shouldn't skip:
The Art District & Plaza Mijares — The historic heart of San José. Wander Alvaro Obregon and José Maria Morelos streets and you'll find art galleries, boho boutiques, hidden sculpture gardens, and walled courtyards worth ducking into.
Thursday Night Art Walk — Every Thursday evening, the Plaza comes alive with vendors, fine art, live music, and street food. My move: grab a hibiscus margarita to-go from Los Tres Gallos and a tamale from Doña Nina and take it all in.
Farm-to-Table Dining — San José is home to two Michelin-recognized restaurants: Flora Farms (Bib Gourmand + Green Star) and Acre (Green Star). Either one is worth making a reservation for.

Tour or DIY?
Absolutely DIY. San José is one of the easiest day trips you can do from Cabo — it's walkable, Uber-friendly, and well worth a few extra hours if you can swing it.
Driving Time
The drive from Cabo San Lucas to San José del Cabo is about 20 miles and typically takes 30–40 minutes. If you're staying in the Tourist Corridor, you're already partway there. Keep rush hour in mind if you're heading to San José for an evening reservation.
Best For
Couples, solo travelers, and anyone who appreciates art, culture, great food, and a slower pace. Also great for families — it's very walkable and low-key.
Todos Santos
Todos Santos sits on the Pacific coast of Baja, about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, and has managed to hold onto its small-town soul despite growing popularity. This is a place that draws artists, surfers, and creatives — and the aesthetic is absolutely Instagram heaven if that matters to you.
Within a relatively small footprint you'll find beautiful boutique hotels, farm-to-table cafes, boho boutiques selling goods made in Mexico, Pacific Ocean sunsets, surf breaks, and hiking. It's the kind of place where a one-day visit leaves most people wishing they had stayed longer.
Don't leave without stopping by the infamous Hotel California for a photo op.
Tour or DIY?
I'm a DIY advocate for a Todos Santos day trip. Being on your own schedule means you can linger in the spots that speak to you rather than being shuffled along. Plus, this gives you the opportunity to stop at other small towns along the way, like Cerritos Beach. You'll need a rental car, but a single-day rental is typically cheaper than the cost of a guided tour, especially if you're not going solo.
From our experience, driving in Baja really isn't all that different from driving in the States — the main highway between Cabo and Todos Santos feels like any US highway, with stunning coastal scenery to boot. Depending on your departure point, you may need to take the toll road - be prepared with some small bills.
If you prefer not to drive, there are good tour options that will take you to the highlights.
Driving Time
Approximately 1 hour from Cabo San Lucas. The majority of the drive is on a well-maintained highway hugging the Pacific coastline.
Best For
Groups, couples, solo travelers, and creatives looking for a laid-back, aesthetically beautiful day with great shopping and dining.
Cabo Pulmo
Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of those places that delivers on the hype — and I don't say that lightly. This UNESCO World Heritage Site sits along the East Cape of Baja and is home to one of the most pristine reef systems in all of North America. Jacques Cousteau called it "the aquarium of the world," and after diving here myself, I'd have a hard time arguing with him.
The crystal-clear waters surrounding Cabo Pulmo are part of a 70 square kilometer national marine park. On our dive trip, we encountered the largest school of jack fish I've ever seen and multiple bull sharks paying us a visit — an unforgettable experience. You also have a strong chance of seeing sea turtles, manta rays, and massive tropical fish schools — and in season, whales offshore.
Want to understand how Cabo Pulmo went from overfished to overflowing with wildlife? This NatGeo documentary is worth 15 minutes of your time.
Tour or DIY?
The Marine Park requires visitors entering the water by boat to be accompanied by an authorized tour operator — so some form of organized tour is required regardless. Given the length of the drive and a full day in the water, I strongly recommend booking a tour that departs from Cabo San Lucas rather than driving independently. It makes for a much more relaxed experience.
If you do drive yourself to Cabo Pulmo, there are two route options: an inland route via Hwy 1 and a scenic coastal route along Camino Cabo Este (the East Cape Road). Both take approximately 2 hours from Cabo San Lucas, but the coastal route is largely unpaved — expect a bumpy ride. A higher clearance vehicle with 4WD is recommended for the East Cape Road.
Driving Time
Approximately 2 hours from Cabo San Lucas.
Best For
Adventurous travelers, divers, and snorkelers looking for a bucket list, full-day experience. Best enjoyed as a guided excursion.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and the most "local" feeling destination on this list — which is exactly what makes it so worth the drive. After days in the tourist-centric bubble of Los Cabos, stepping into La Paz feels like a breath of fresh air. The city has a distinct, authentic Mexican character that you simply don't get in Cabo.
A few highlights that make La Paz worth the trip:
Swimming with Whale Sharks — From October through May, whale sharks congregate in the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez just off La Paz. This is a legitimate bucket list experience. These gentle giants can grow up to 60 feet long and feed only on plankton and microorganisms. Swimming with them is tightly regulated to protect the population, so you'll need to book with an authorized tour operator. Learn more in my full whale watching guide.
Isla Espiritu Santo — A stunning island about an hour offshore by boat, known for white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and a resident colony of sea lions you can actually snorkel with.
Playa Balandra — This protected bay is known for its impossibly calm, shallow turquoise water — a stark contrast to the rougher beaches around Cabo. There are nearby hiking trails with sweeping views of the bay.
Explore the City — Stroll La Paz's Malecon seafront promenade, discover street art, visit colonial-era churches and plazas, and eat extremely well. Fresh seafood along the Malecon is abundant and excellent.
Tour or DIY?
If you're just exploring the city or Playa Balandra, a rental car works perfectly. For whale sharks or Isla Espíritu Santo, you'll need to book an organized tour. If you want to do multiple experiences in La Paz, seriously consider an overnight stay to avoid making that drive twice.
Driving Time
Approximately 2 hours from Cabo San Lucas. Add another 30 minutes if you're heading to Balandra Beach specifically.
Best For
Travelers looking for bucket list wildlife experiences, stunning beaches, and the chance to explore an authentically Mexican city.
Sierra de la Laguna: Hot Springs & Waterfall Day Trip
This one tends to surprise people, and honestly, that's part of why I love recommending it. Tucked into the mountains of Baja California Sur, the Sierra de la Laguna biosphere reserve doesn't look like it should exist in the same region as the Cabo marina — but it does, and it's spectacular.
Sol de Mayo Waterfall — The crown jewel of the area. A multi-tiered waterfall set in a palm-lined canyon, with a swimmable pool at the base that makes the hike completely worth it. The trail is accessible enough for most travelers while still feeling like a proper adventure.
Natural Hot Springs (Aguas Termales) — Natural mineral-rich pools tucked among the rocks. A perfect complement to the waterfall hike — soak your muscles before the drive back.
Tour or DIY?
The drive into the Sierra involves some unpaved roads, so a higher clearance vehicle is recommended for independent travelers. If you don't have a rental car or prefer a guided experience, organized tours from Cabo San Lucas typically combine the waterfall hike and hot springs into a single trip and handle all the logistics.
Driving Time
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Cabo San Lucas depending on your route and road conditions. The final stretch into the canyon is unpaved, so budget extra time.
Best For
Hikers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to escape the beach scene entirely for a day. Best visited during the cooler months (November through April) when mountain temperatures are pleasant and water levels in the falls tend to be higher.

About Cabo San Lucas
The Location
Cabo San Lucas sits at the very southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, at the dramatic point where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez converge. It is located approximately 20 miles from San José del Cabo and about 45 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).
The Weather
Cabo San Lucas has a tropical desert climate with two distinct seasons:
Hot Season (June–October): Daytime highs in the 90s, evenings in the mid-70s. This is also the most humid time of year.
Cool Season (December–March): Daytime highs in the low 80s, evenings as cool as 60°F. This is also prime whale season.
The Vibe
Cabo San Lucas is the louder, more festive counterpart to San José del Cabo. The marina is the heart of the action — lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and tour operators. It's also the launching point for most water-based activities, from glass-bottom boat tours to deep sea fishing charters. Beyond the marina, Cabo has a super walkable tourist zone with great dining, nightlife, and easy access to some of Baja's most iconic scenery.
I'm Confused by All These "Cabos" — Can You Break It Down?
Fair question — the naming conventions can absolutely spin your head. Here's a quick cheat sheet:
Los Cabos: The overarching region, also casually referred to as "Cabo"
Cabo San Lucas: The lively marina town, known for El Arco, nightlife, fishing, and restaurants
San José del Cabo: Also called "San José" — the historic, artsy sister city about 20 miles away
Tourist Corridor: The stretch of coastline and Hwy 1 between the two towns, lined with resorts and golf courses
Tips for Visiting Cabo San Lucas
Flying Into Cabo
The closest airport is Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), with direct flights from throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Upon arrival, after clearing customs, proceed directly outside to meet your pre-arranged transportation — do not engage the salespeople inside the terminal.
Airport Transfers from SJD
🚐 Shuttle: The most affordable and efficient option if you're not renting a car. I always use Cabo Airport Shuttle — they offer private and shared options, and private shuttles can include a 30-minute grocery stop en route. Book in advance.
🚕 Uber / Taxi: Uber is technically available but can't pick up from the arrivals area, which makes it inconvenient. A taxi is the better on-demand option — just agree on a fare at an official desk before you go.
🚗 Rental Car: Your rental agency will shuttle you to an off-site lot to pick up your vehicle. If day trips are on your agenda, a rental car is highly recommended — most of the destinations in this guide are not practical to reach without one.
Getting Around
For a stay centered around the marina, you can get by without a car — Uber works well for getting around town and to nearby beaches. But if day trips are part of your plan (and I hope they are after reading this), a rental car is a must. Baja's highways include toll roads, so keep some pesos on hand for the casetas (toll booths).
If you're staying on a resort with concierge staff, they can likely assist with arranging a rental car for you if you plan to rent for just a portion of your trip. Ours collaborated with Enterprise, who delivered and picked the car up from the hotel for even more convenience.
Tours are also a great alternative if you'd rather not drive — especially for Cabo Pulmo and Sierra de la Laguna, where unpaved roads and park logistics add complexity that a local guide handles seamlessly.
Best Time to Visit
December through April is the sweet spot for Cabo San Lucas. Temperatures are comfortable (low-to-mid 80s by day, 60s at night), crowds are manageable, and it's peak season for whale watching along the coast.
Is Cabo San Lucas Safe?
Cabo San Lucas is generally considered a safe destination for tourists. As of 2026, it carries a Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) rating from the U.S. State Department — comparable to many European cities. Use the same common sense you would in any major tourist destination: stay aware of your surroundings, stick to well-trafficked areas at night, and you'll be just fine.
Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas
Best Splurge: Esperanza, Auberge Collection — 57 ocean view casitas and suites on the only private beach in Los Cabos. Barefoot luxury at its finest.
Best All-Inclusive: Grand Velas Los Cabos — I don't usually recommend all-inclusive in Los Cabos given the incredible independent dining scene, but Grand Velas earns it with exceptional service, a world-class spa, and dedicated kids and teen clubs. The adults-only Grand Velas Boutique Hotel next door is worth a look for couples.
Best Family-Friendly: Westin Los Cabos — Studio and multi-bedroom units with kitchenettes, a kids club, daily programming, and a wonderful spa. Reliable and well-located.

Where to Eat in Cabo San Lucas
Cabo is known for its world-class dining — don't let the marina tourist traps fool you. Step a few blocks back from the waterfront and you'll find some excellent restaurants.
Tacos Gus — a quintessential, no frills street taco spot. It's always a good sign when the local cops are eating there.
Los Guacamayas — A Cabo classic with locations in both towns. Order the al pastor tacos.
Los Tres Gallos — Great margaritas (try the hibiscus) in a gorgeous setting. Locations in both Cabo San Lucas and San José.
Juan More Taco — My go-to recommendation for food tours in Cabo San Lucas. A great way to explore the local food scene while getting your bearings in the city.
Pro tip from me: Most of the restaurants directly on the marina are overpriced and underwhelming. Walk a few blocks inland and the quality goes up dramatically. And if you're making the 30-minute drive to San José del Cabo for dinner — especially on a Thursday for Art Walk — the farm-to-table options at Flora Farms and Acre are worth every minute of the drive.
